About this part
The 225P is Sprague's Orange Drop polyester film and foil capacitor in the pressed profile radial case, here 0.33 microfarads at 200 volts DC with a 10 percent tolerance. The number encodes the rating: 334 is the capacitance in picofarads, 9 is the 10 percent tolerance, 2 is 200 volts, and the trailing letter is the case code, Y at this value and voltage.
Construction is a single section, non inductively wound element using polyester film with extended aluminum foil electrodes, finished in an orange flame retardant epoxy conformal coating that meets UL94V-0. The AC rating at 200 VDC is 140 volts RMS at 60 Hz. Full voltage operation runs -55 to +85 degrees C, with 70 percent of the rating available to +105 degrees C and 50 percent to +125 degrees C. Dissipation factor is 0.75 percent maximum at 1 kHz.
Film and foil behaves differently from metallized film: it does not self heal after a dielectric puncture, but it carries higher pulse current and holds capacitance well. That combination is why the 225P shows up in tube audio, instrumentation, test equipment and power supply coupling and bypass positions. On old stock, check the leads for tarnish and inspect the epoxy for chips or hairline cracks, since a broken coating lets moisture reach the winding.
Questions about this part
Is the 225P the same thing as a Black Beauty?
No. The 225P is the orange epoxy coated polyester film and foil Orange Drop. The black moulded Sprague tubulars called Black Beauties are an earlier family built on paper and paper plus film, with a very different reputation for leaking DC.
How do I read the part number?
225P is the type. The next three digits are capacitance in picofarads with the third digit as the zero count, so 334 is 0.33 microfarad. The next digit is tolerance, where 0 is 20 percent, 9 is 10 percent and 5 is 5 percent. The next digit is voltage in hundreds. The letter that follows is the case code.
Film and foil or metallized film?
Film and foil. The element is polyester film wound with discrete extended aluminum foil electrodes. Film and foil does not self heal, but it handles higher current pulses and has lower ESR than a comparable metallized part.
What is the AC rating?
140 volts RMS at 60 Hz for the 200 VDC part. Above 60 Hz or in a high dV/dt position, treat the AC rating with caution.
Can I run these above 85 degrees C?
Yes with derating. 70 percent of the 85 degree C voltage rating at 105 degrees C, and 50 percent at 125 degrees C, which is the maximum for the polyester dielectric.
What should I check on stored stock?
Look at the epoxy for chips and hairline cracks, since the coating is the moisture barrier. Check lead tarnish. A capacitance and dissipation factor check on a bridge will catch anything that has taken on moisture.
Are these still made?
The Orange Drop line has been produced by SB Electronics of Barre, Vermont, and distributed through the Sprague and Vishay network. Sprague branded stock is older production of the same design.
