About this part

The FZT753 is a PNP silicon planar medium power transistor in SOT223, originally a Zetex part and now catalogued by Diodes Incorporated. It is rated at 100 V collector to emitter, 2 A continuous collector current and 6 A peak pulse, with 2 W dissipation at 25 C ambient.

The point of the part is gain at current: hFE is specified all the way up, 100 to 300 at 500 mA and still 25 minimum at 2 A, with saturation under 300 mV at 1 A. That combination makes it a high side switch, relay and solenoid driver, small motor driver, linear regulator pass element and audio driver, in places where a small signal PNP runs out of headroom and a TO220 device is overkill. The complementary NPN is the FZT653.

The tab is the collector, so the copper pour under the tab is the heatsink and the 2 W figure only holds with real board area behind it. The TA suffix is a packing code, not a die difference: tape and reel, 7 inch reel, 1000 pieces, 12 mm tape. Parts cut from that reel are the same device as any other FZT753. On old stock, check the leads and tab for oxidation that will resist wetting, since SOT223 tabs solder poorly once tarnished, and confirm the top marking reads FZT753.

Questions about this part

  • What does the TA suffix mean?

It is the packing code. TA is tape and reel on a 7 inch reel, 1000 pieces, in 12 mm tape. The TC suffix on the same part number is a 13 inch reel of 2500 pieces. The silicon and the package are identical.

  • Is the tab connected to anything?

Yes, the SOT223 tab is the collector, electrically and thermally. It must be soldered to a copper area, and that copper is at collector potential, so keep clearance from other nets.

  • How much power can it really dissipate?

The datasheet figure is 2 W at 25 C ambient, which assumes the tab is soldered to an adequate copper pad. On a small pad it will be much less, and it derates as ambient rises toward the 150 C junction limit.

  • What is the complementary NPN?

The FZT653, also SOT223 and also rated 100 V and 2 A, for push pull and totem pole pairs.

  • Can I use it as a linear pass element?

Yes, within the safe operating area. At 2 A the minimum hFE is 25, so the base drive current is significant. Check the SOA curve at your collector to emitter voltage before running it linear.

  • Are the voltage and current ratings negative?

They are quoted as negative because it is a PNP device. The magnitude is what matters when comparing against an NPN part.

  • Will old stock still solder properly?

Usually yes, but tin plating oxidises. Inspect the tab and the three leads for dullness and test one part on a scrap board first. The tab needs enough heat to bring the whole pad to reflow temperature.
