About this part

A power device in a flanged metal package with two bolt holes, which puts it in the family of parts designed to be clamped to a chassis or a heatsink and to carry real current while doing it. The flange is the electrical connection as well as the mechanical one on most packages of this shape, so whatever it bolts to is usually at the collector potential and needs an insulating washer if the chassis is grounded.

Elm Semiconductor is not a name that turns up in the general purpose catalogues, and this part number does not appear in the usual cross reference tables. That is worth stating plainly rather than papering over: if you need this device it is almost certainly because you are repairing a specific piece of equipment that specified it, and you already know more about the application than any listing can tell you. The case is marked ELM384 and nothing here is inferred from a datasheet nobody can produce.

One is on the shelf. It came out of the original Elm Semiconductor carton, individually packaged, and the box is included. Sold untested, because a power device needs a curve tracer and a heatsink to say anything meaningful about it and neither is in the workshop.

Questions about this part

  • Where can I find a datasheet for the ELM384?

We could not find one, and we would rather say so than point you at a guess. Elm Semiconductor part numbers do not appear in the common cross reference tables. If you need this device you are almost certainly repairing equipment that called for it by name, and the equipment manual will be a better source than anything we could supply.

  • Is the flange electrically live?

On almost every package of this shape the mounting flange is the collector, so assume it is live until you have proved otherwise with a meter. If it is bolting to a grounded chassis it needs an insulating washer and a shouldered bush.

  • Does it come with the original box?

Yes. It was individually packed in the original Elm Semiconductor carton and the carton ships with it. The box shows normal storage wear.

  • Why is it sold untested?

A power transistor cannot be assessed with a handheld component tester. It wants a curve tracer, a heatsink and a supply that can deliver the current, and none of that is on this bench. What can be confirmed is that it has never been mounted: the flange has no bolt marks and the leads are unclipped.
