About this part
The PK264-03B is a NEMA 23 two phase stepping motor from Oriental Motor's Vexta PK series: 56.4 mm square, 39 mm long, double shaft, six lead wires. The 03 suffix is the 3 A per phase winding, the lowest impedance of the three standard PK264 windings, which is what you want behind a modern constant current chopper running from a 24 to 48 V supply. Holding torque is 0.39 Nm wired unipolar and 0.48 Nm wired bipolar series. Six leads gives you the choice: unipolar with the centre taps commoned, bipolar series for torque at low speed, or bipolar half coil for speed.
The 4GN25KA sold alongside it is a separate item, a 25 to 1 parallel shaft GN gearhead in the 80 mm square frame with a 3/8 inch output shaft. GN gearheads bolt to Oriental Motor 25 W class AC motors that carry a GN pinion on the rotor shaft, such as the 4IK25GN and 4RK25GN. It is not a factory mate for a 56.4 mm stepper, so treat these as two separately usable parts rather than an assembly.
On old stock, turn the motor shaft by hand and feel for even detents, ring out all six leads for two matched pairs plus taps, check the shaft and pilot for damage, and turn the gearhead input to check for hardened grease and excess backlash.
Questions about this part
Does the 4GN25KA gearhead fit the PK264-03B motor?
No. The 4GN gearhead is built for Oriental Motor's 80 mm frame, 25 W class AC motors that carry a GN pinion on the rotor shaft. The PK264 is a 56.4 mm NEMA 23 stepper with a plain 6.35 mm shaft. They are two separate parts sold together, not a matched gearmotor.
What motors does the 4GN25KA actually fit?
Oriental Motor 25 W class induction, reversible and brake motors in the 80 mm frame with a GN pinion, for example the 4IK25GN and 4RK25GN families. The gearhead attaches directly, no coupling required.
What does the 03B in PK264-03B mean?
PK is the high torque 2 phase stepping motor type, 2 is the phase count, 6 is the 56.4 mm frame, 4 is the case length, 03 is the rated current per phase code, 3 A, and B is double shaft. The single shaft equivalent is PK264-03A.
Can I drive it bipolar?
Yes. It has six leads, so ignore the two centre taps and drive the four outer leads. Bipolar series gives 0.48 Nm holding torque at 2.1 A per phase, trading top speed for low speed torque against half coil wiring.
Which lead colour goes where?
The six leads are black, green, red, blue, yellow and white. In the standard unipolar hookup black and green are the two ends of one phase, red and blue the other, and yellow and white are the centre taps. Confirm with a meter before wiring.
What driver do I need?
Any constant current bipolar chopper driver sized for at least 2.1 A per phase, or a unipolar driver at 3 A per phase. The 1.9 V unipolar rating is the winding voltage at rated current, not the supply voltage.
What output speed does 25 to 1 give?
Divide the input speed by 25. On a 4 pole 60 Hz induction motor at a synchronous 1800 r/min that is 72 r/min nominal, with the real figure typically 2 to 20 percent lower under load.
What should I check on an old gearhead?
Turn the input pinion and feel for even resistance with no notching, check for grease that has separated or hardened, look for weeping at the output shaft seal, and measure backlash at the output before committing it to a positioning job.
